The Power Station and Its Tunnel Under the River

Built in 1901 by the Canadian Niagara Power Company, this station ran for a century before reopening as a museum in 2021. Its old tailrace, sealed for sixteen years, is now a 670-metre tunnel to a platform at river level.

The Free Riverbank and the Road That Runs Its Length

Before 1885, rival museums charged for the best views of the falls. A public commission that year, and the park it opened in 1888, made the Canadian riverbank free, a rule the 55 to 56 kilometre Niagara Parkway still carries end to end.

The Summer Engineers Turned Off the American Falls

In 1969 the US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Niagara River and left American Falls dry for five months to inspect a buildup of rock at its base, then chose to leave that rock in place.
